1909: aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin organized a company around a modest airplane construction business.
1912: Allan and Malcolm Loughead form the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company. The company's early engineers include Donald Douglas, James McDonnell and Chance Vought.
Martin performs the world's first major over-ocean flight--34 miles--in his own hydroplane
1913: Allan and Malcolm Loughhead (name later changed to Lockheed) flew the first Lockheed plane over San Francisco Bay.
1917: Glenn Martin pulls out of the Wright-Martin Company and reestablishes the Glenn L. Martin Company in Ohio.
1961: Martin Marietta was established when the Glenn L. Martin Company merged with American-Marietta Corp.
1995: Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta merged.

1939 Martin PBM 5 Mariner
The first PBM flight occurred on February 18, 1939. 1,235 were built with the last one being delivered in April 1949. Mariners built prior to 1946 were flying boats, and all that followed became amphibious with the addition of the retractable tricycle landing gear.
