Jade became British Columbia’s official gemstone in 1968. The story behind its adoption seems to nearly forgotten. It is said that jade was promoted mostly by a rockhound named Peter White.

Most British Columbia jade is of the variety known as nephrite. It is prized by carvers of fine jewellery and sculptures, especially in the Orient. Jade is also an official symbol of Alaska and Wyoming.

THIS 1 FOOT THICK SLICE WAS CUT FROM A LARGE BOULDER FOUND NEAR DEASE LAKE, IN THE NORTH-WEST CORNER OF THIS PROVINCE, REQUIRING MORE THAN 200 HOURS OF CONTINUOUS CUTTING WITH DIAMOND FIELD SAWS.
