About the Club

History
The Fraser Valley Flying Club is incorporated as Mission Aero Enterprises Ltd. and has it's roots in the town of Mission. The Club was known as the Mission Flying Club until the year 2000 when, in order to more properly reflect the geographical diversity of the members, they voted to change the name to the Fraser Valley Flying Club.
  • The Club's first aeroplane was a 1957 C172, CF-NZW
        - as reported by Teye DeVries
        - CF-NZW is currently assigned to a 1962 C172c, Serial #17249366
  • The aerodrome was initially in the swampy area of Mission, now occupied by the large shopping centre. Later the club moved a bit further south to the north bank of the Fraser River.
  • In 1960 the club incorporated and became Mission Aero Enterprises Ltd.
  • Our second aeroplane was a 1963 green and white C172, CF-VEK
        - as reported by Teye DeVries
        - VEK is currently assigned to a 1966 C172G, Serial #17254727
  • Between 1968 and 1970 the club, negotiating with a Mr. Ron Farmer, sold the river-side aerodrome to Mission Custom Car Association, for $6,000 plus perpetual landing rights and a space for a hangar (which we never quite got around to building). The club's lawyer for the transaction was a Mr. Bill Gordie.
  • In 1976 each member chipped in $1,300 (plus the trade-in value of CF-VEK) and purchased the one year old 1976 C-172M, C-GHUU, (500 hours TTSN) for $26,000 from the Abbotsford Flight Centre.
Note: The tachometer was immediately replaced with one that displays 1/100 of an hour.
  • For many years there was no drag strip but, with rumours of government involvement, in 1991 the aerodrome beside the river eventually became the Mission Raceway
The club coexisted nicely with the Mission Custom Car Association with the drag-strip providing an ideal paved runway. Race organizers would pause the races whenever our aeroplane did a low-and-over which was the signal that we wanted to land.
  • In October 1991 HUU suffered a wing strike while taxing at the Mission Raceway. The members felt that a treeless environment was highly desirable so in early 1992 HUU left the Mission Raceway and was permanently stationed at Abbotsford.
  • Initially HUU was moved to outdoor parking at Abbotsford but in May 1998 Hangar #25 was leased. Eventually HUU found its way to the current location in Hangar #34 where some of the members have built walls, installed lights, and generally made significant improvements.
